War of The World Campaign

Thu May 14, 2009, 11:14 AM
I've been busy gaming for the last month or so. No, not a new pc game or console game, but a play by post dungeon and dragon role playing game. It's been a while since I played a play-by-post game in [link] it's pure luck that I stumbled upon this campaign. I was lucky, since this is a really epic alternate history/steampunk campaign that I always wanted to play. I really love steampunk and victorian age.

If you're interested, you could read our adventure at [link]

What did you say? How did a pbp game devoured my time that much? Aren't if you're not the dm, you only need to check it maybe once or twice per day, writing one or two paragraph, and then wait for a response?

Yes, but we used DnD 4th edition, which I wasn't familiar with. I spent days familiarizing myself with it, and trying to build a character at the same time. Luckily my party members and DM are helpful and light hearted on my various stumbles on rules. Not helping was my class choice, I picked a bard, which was the class that I was most familiar with in the third edition, that's completely chopped down and reassembled on the fourth edition.

We used the 4th edition rule for a steampunk campaign. Basically, each player must retool their class and weapons and powers and whatnot from a fantasy setting into a steampunk setting. For example, my bard turned out to be a reporter. She doesn't have any musical instrument, but she use inspirational quotes to lift party's morale. Her crossbow turned into a rifle, and her hand-crossbow into a revolver. And her power were also retooled. Her 'eyebite' power for example, which was supposed to be magical, is retooled into her using her camera's flash to blind opponents.

Another example is this one druid character. But instead of a tree hugging elf that can turn into a bear, he's an enginer that used steam powered exoskeletal suit. Instead of shooting fireball, he used fire grenade. And instead of using whiping vine, he use grappling hook. Things like that.

And then, for some reason, I find the game really... draw worthy. It's epic, with interesting cast of characters, a blend of cliche, classic steampunk role, a bit of parody, and a smidge of originality cast that made me want to draw them. Or maybe it's just because I just got how to use pen tool, and want to try to use them. You can see the result on my gallery.

What's the campaign about?

In the late 19th century, earth was invaded by aliens. Starting at madrid, spain, they completely defeated earth's defense and managed to conquer half of europe in less than a year. Forgetting their ancient rivalry for a moment, european kingdoms banded together and tried to fight back, but it's useless. More and more country succumbed under the alien's advanced war machines.

Kloster was an unimportant little town in the heart of europe. And fate brought a chain of events that bring together a band of misfit from across the continent, events that might turn the tide of war...

It's a story of hope in the middle of despair. Pinpoint of light in the overwhelming sea of darkness. And fight for mankind's survival.

The cast of character goes like this:

Lt. Alexandra Strauss. A female prussian military officer that had lost her patriotism for her country. She's a warlord, a 'leader' class that use martial exploit to support her troop.

Malcolm Prentice. A gentlemanly british big game hunter with dashing moustache and a desire to drive the aliens back from her ancestral home. A ranger, with a big elephant gun and a knack for tea.

Mitch Dunstan. A young, brash, british street fighter with strong sense of justice. A fighter with double punching dagger and hot blood.

Elizabeth Shelley. A perky and optimistic british reporter, that's actually struggling to keep her optimism alight. This is my character, a bard.

Luis Cruz de La Vega. A genius spanish engineer with an experimental exoskeleton suit and eyes for alien technology. Has been traveling with elizabeth for some time. A druid.

and Markus Waltz, a dour, extremely religious, german blue collar worker that want nothing more than working in peace in his small town. He's a cleric with a power fist.

According to my GM, they might fit the traditional heroic band:

-Alexandra as the main hero.
-Malcolm as the lancer/second in command
-Mitch as the muscle/strong guy
-Luiz as the smart guy
-Elizabeth as the chick
-Markus as the sixth ranger
